Case Review
Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure
Wu (戊) Earth is the earth of city walls, signifying solidity and society; the year and month pillars reveal Direct Officer and Friend, with Earth appearing four times. Looking back on Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility — English society portrayed through the prism of gentry marriages — it reflects “thick Earth” bearing all manner of people; the Direct Officer may be read in her writing on the order and morality of marriage.
Wood loosens Earth (Yi 乙 Wood as Direct Officer), and the nimbleness of her irony is a gloss on that loosening Wood. Heavy Earth signifies keeping to oneself — she never married and wrote in quiet country seclusion. Her death at forty-one, little known in life and a classic only afterwards, can be observed in hindsight as “heavy Earth shows little at first; long accumulation, late release.”
This is a retrospective cross-cultural comparison, not a definitive claim.
