Case Review

Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure

Xin (辛) Metal is the Metal of pearls and jade. Born in Mao (卯), the middle month of spring, Wood (Wealth) is strong while Metal is scarce. Traditional destiny analysis speaks of “much Wealth, weak self: a poor man in a rich house,” which offers one angle of observation: as a commoner Kang Youwei set out to lever an empire into reform; his “Petition of the Examination Candidates” made his name across the land, yet his foundations were never secure, and the reform collapsed after a hundred days, much like “abundant Wealth that is hard to carry.”

The Indirect Wealth in the month pillar suggests an unconventional path: “reforming institutions in the name of antiquity” and his philosophy of the Great Unity were both extraordinary ideas. The Direct Resource in the year pillar points to scholarly foundations, matching his deep learning in the classics. His life, which began brilliantly and ended in decline, can be observed in hindsight at a cultural level through the structure of “strong Wood, lacking Metal, and no Earth to nourish the roots,” without passing value judgments.
