Case Review

Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure

Ji (己) Earth is the Earth of fields and gardens, with Seven Killings and Friend revealed in the year and month, and Wood and Earth at war (three Wood, three Earth). Looking back on the life of Tan Sitong, one of the “Six Gentlemen of the Wuxu Reform”: Wood controls Earth, as reform crashed against the old order; his martyrdom, “I raise my sword and laugh at the sky; whether I go or stay, my heart stands like the Kunlun,” mirrors the fierce resolve of Seven Killings, giving his life for a righteous cause.

Multiple Friends (both month and day are Jimao 己卯) signify standing shoulder to shoulder with Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao and fellow reformers. Wood and Earth at war: the intensity and brevity of the Hundred Days’ Reform can be observed in hindsight through the structure of “Wood and Earth in conflict, both sides wounded.” His self-awareness, “In every country, reform has been achieved through bloodshed; in China today no one has yet shed blood for reform, and that is why the nation does not prosper. If there must be one, let it begin with me,” is the ultimate footnote to Earth’s virtue of “trustworthiness.”

This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
