Is it okay to store things under the bed?

The short answer

Yes, but keep it to soft, sleep-related things like spare bedding. A space crammed with odds and ends keeps "I still need to sort that" on your mind and gathers dust.

Why it feels uncomfortable

In one family study, wives who used more words like "cluttered" and "unfinished" to describe their homes had a slower drop in stress hormones through the day and worse moods (Saxbe & Repetti 2010). It's a correlation, so it doesn't show what causes what, but the feeling of an unfinished home does go along with stress. A packed space under the bed is exactly that kind of hidden to-do.

What tradition says

Feng shui says the space under a bed should be open and airy, not used for clutter.

Three ways to fix it

  1. Do it nowDo one thing today: take out everything under the bed that isn't bedding and put it where it belongs.
  2. Move some furnitureKeep spare bedding in lidded boxes with gaps between them so you can vacuum.
  3. If you can't change itShort on space? A storage bed or bed with drawers at least gives things a fixed, tidy place.

FAQ

Does a storage bed count as clutter?

A storage bed keeps things closed and orderly, which is much better than loose piles. Air it out now and then to avoid damp.

Can I keep shoes there?

Shoes bring in dust and smells, so they're better by the entrance or in a shoe cabinet.
