What if the bathroom door opens into the kitchen?

The short answer

With the bathroom door opening straight into the kitchen, the worry is smells and damp drifting over while you cook. China's national code no longer allows this in new homes. In an older home, start with a door closer and an exhaust fan, and keep the door shut.

Why it feels uncomfortable

China's Residential Project Code (GB 55038-2025), clause 4.1.6, says a bathroom with a toilet should not open directly into the kitchen. The code doesn't explain why, but the reason is easy to see: smells and damp from the bathroom go straight into the place where food is prepared. Older homes aren't bound by it, but it shows this layout isn't a good one.

What tradition says

Feng shui says the kitchen and toilet shouldn't connect, and the cooking area should stay clean. On this point it points the same way as the national code.

Three ways to fix it

  1. Do it nowKeep the bathroom door shut and fit an automatic closer; run the bathroom exhaust fan for a while before you start cooking.
  2. Move some furnitureAdd a draught strip under the bathroom door and seals around the frame so smells and damp don't escape through the gaps.
  3. If you can't change itWhen you next renovate, consider moving the bathroom door to the hallway side. That means changing a wall, so check with your building management and a qualified contractor first.

FAQ

Is an older home with this layout breaking the rules?

Older homes were built to the standards of their time. GB 55038-2025 mainly covers the design of new homes; what it tells us is that this layout isn't ideal, so it's worth improving where you can.

What if the room has no toilet, just a washing machine or mop sink?

The code refers to bathrooms with a toilet. Without one, smell is much less of an issue, but there's still damp, so keep using the exhaust fan.
