What if there's a walkway behind your sofa?

The short answer

With a walkway or door behind the sofa, someone is always passing at your back and it's hard to fully relax. You don't need to renovate: a narrow console table or low cabinet behind the sofa separates the path from the seat and helps a lot.

Why it feels uncomfortable

Prospect-refuge theory in environmental psychology says people prefer to rest where their back is covered and they can see what's ahead. With open space behind the sofa and people walking through, part of your attention stays on your back, so sitting there is more tiring than it should be. The theory has mostly been tested in cafés and public spaces, not homes, so we mark it as indirect evidence.

What tradition says

Feng shui says a seat should have “backing”: ideally a solid wall behind the sofa. We don't rate the saying itself, but it describes the same feeling — you relax when your back feels covered.

Three ways to fix it

  1. Do it nowPut a narrow console table or low cabinet about as long as the sofa behind it, with a lamp or a plant on top, so the path and the seat are separated.
  2. Move some furnitureIf you can move things, put the sofa's back against a solid wall and route the walkway along its side or in front.
  3. If you can't change itIf the room only works this way, choose a sofa with a higher back, or lay a runner rug that marks the path so people naturally pass a little further away.

FAQ

Does a window behind the sofa count as “no backing”?

A window is much better than a walkway, because nobody walks past it. If it's bright or draughty, add a sheer curtain or leave a little space between the sofa and the window.

My living room is too small for a cabinet behind the sofa. What then?

A shelf 20–30 cm deep is enough, or use a floor lamp or a large plant instead. The point is to have something there rather than open space.
