Is Today an Auspicious 'Yellow Path' Day? Origins of Huangdao and Heidao Days

Updated 2026-10-14

"Pick a yellow-path day" is a common Chinese phrase for weddings, moves and openings. What does it mean, and how are the almanac's yellow and black path days worked out?

Two meanings of "huangdao"

In astronomy, huangdao is the ecliptic — the sun's yearly path across the stars, which also defines the 24 solar terms. In date selection it names a system of twelve day deities taking turns on duty: six are "yellow path", six "black path". A day ruled by a yellow-path deity is a huangdao day. The two meanings just share a name.

The twelve deities

  • Yellow path: Azure Dragon, Bright Hall, Golden Casket, Heavenly Virtue, Jade Hall, Life Controller.
  • Black path: Heavenly Punishment, Vermilion Bird, White Tiger, Heavenly Prison, Black Tortoise, Hook Array.

They rotate in fixed order. Each month's starting deity depends on the month branch, then counts day by day — so yellow and black days alternate and a month usually has plenty of yellow days. The same scheme applies to the twelve double-hours, so some almanacs also mark "yellow-path hours".

Checking today

  1. Find the day-deity line, e.g. "Heavenly Virtue (yellow)" or "Heavenly Prison (black)".
  2. Match it to the lists above.
  3. Read the favorable/unfavorable lists too. These also weigh the Twelve Officers and many other stars, so a yellow day can have taboos and a black day can have favorable items.
  4. Mind the time zone. The lunar calendar is based on Beijing time.

Common misunderstandings

  • "Everything is fine on a yellow day" — no; it's one dimension.
  • "Do nothing on a black day" — also no; it's a category name.
  • "Different almanacs disagree, so one is wrong" — schools differ; each is a tradition.

How to see it

Choosing a day reflects how seriously people took time — wishing to begin big things well. Keep the sense of ritual, but plan around weather, transport, family schedules and venues.

Summary

Whether today is a yellow-path day depends on which of the twelve deities is on duty. It is a category within traditional date selection, not a promise of results. For cultural reference only.
