What Is Tai Sui? Origins of the 'Year God' and Which Zodiac Signs Clash in 2026

Updated 2026-10-14

Each new year people ask which zodiac signs "offend Tai Sui". What is Tai Sui, and how does it relate to BaZi? Here is a cultural introduction.

Astronomical origin: Jupiter and Tai Sui

Ancient Chinese astronomers saw that Jupiter circles the sky in about twelve years. They called it the "Year Star" and divided the sky into twelve sections to count years by its position. But Jupiter moves opposite to the order of the twelve earthly branches, so they imagined a counterpart body moving the other way at the same speed. That imaginary body is Tai Sui (also called Tai Yin or Sui Yin). As stem-branch year counting matured, each year's stem-branch became that year's Tai Sui — so "this year's Tai Sui" is simply this year's stem-branch.

Tai Sui in 2026

2026 is Bing Wu; the branch Wu is the Horse. In BaZi the year runs from Lichun 2026 to Lichun 2027; folk custom often uses Chinese New Year. In popular religion each of the sixty years has its own Tai Sui deity, and Taoist temples often enshrine all sixty.

Ways of "offending Tai Sui"

Folk custom compares your birth-year branch (zodiac sign) with the year's branch:

  • Zhi (same year): your own zodiac year — Horse in 2026.
  • Chong (clash): Zi clashes Wu — Rat in 2026.
  • Xing (punishment): Wu punishes itself — usually Horse again.
  • Hai (harm): Chou harms Wu — Ox in 2026.
  • Po (break): Mao breaks Wu — Rabbit in 2026.

Books and regions differ: some list only the first two, others all five.

How the ancients debated it

Tai Sui taboos — avoiding its direction when moving house or breaking ground — were common by the Han dynasty. Wang Chong's Lun Heng devotes a chapter to refuting them as unreasonable. Even two thousand years ago, Tai Sui taboos met rational criticism. The culture mixes calendar astronomy and folk belief, and the two are worth separating.

Tai Sui and BaZi

Your zodiac sign is only the year-pillar branch, one of eight characters. In BaZi the annual pillar is read against the whole chart and current luck pillar — which Ten God the year stem is, and whether the year branch clashes or combines with your day or month branch. People of the same sign can have very different years.

A calm view

Wearing red in your zodiac year or visiting a temple at New Year are long-standing customs for peace of mind, but there is no need for anxiety. How a year goes depends mostly on your plans, effort and surroundings.

Summary

Tai Sui grew from an imagined celestial body used to count years and now corresponds to each year's stem-branch; 2026's is Bing Wu. "Offending Tai Sui" is a folk rule based on branch relationships and is only one factor from a BaZi point of view.
