"Rat and Ox are a great match", "Tiger and Monkey clash" — you hear this often. Where do zodiac harmonies and clashes come from, and how should we see them?
The root: earthly branches
The twelve signs map to the twelve branches: Zi Rat, Chou Ox, Yin Tiger, Mao Rabbit, Chen Dragon, Si Snake, Wu Horse, Wei Goat, Shen Monkey, You Rooster, Xu Dog, Hai Pig. Zodiac "compatibility" is really branch relationships. Tradition places the branches on a circle linked to directions, seasons and elements — Zi due north, Water, winter; Wu due south, Fire, summer — and derives relationships from geometry and elements.
The main relationships
1. Three Harmonies — branches four steps apart form a triangle and an element frame:
- Shen-Zi-Chen, Water: Monkey, Rat, Dragon
- Hai-Mao-Wei, Wood: Pig, Rabbit, Goat
- Yin-Wu-Xu, Fire: Tiger, Horse, Dog
- Si-You-Chou, Metal: Snake, Rooster, Ox
2. Six Harmonies — six pairs:
- Zi-Chou: Rat & Ox
- Yin-Hai: Tiger & Pig
- Mao-Xu: Rabbit & Dog
- Chen-You: Dragon & Rooster
- Si-Shen: Snake & Monkey
- Wu-Wei: Horse & Goat
3. Six Clashes — opposite branches, six steps apart:
- Zi-Wu: Rat & Horse
- Chou-Wei: Ox & Goat
- Yin-Shen: Tiger & Monkey
- Mao-You: Rabbit & Rooster
- Chen-Xu: Dragon & Dog
- Si-Hai: Snake & Pig
Clashing branches sit north–south, east–west or diagonally opposite, hence "opposition".
4. Six Harms — Zi-Wei, Chou-Wu, Yin-Si, Mao-Chen, Shen-Hai, You-Xu. A branch harms the one that clashes with its Six Harmony partner: Zi combines with Chou, Wei clashes Chou, so Zi harms Wei.
5. Punishments — the Yin-Si-Shen and Chou-Xu-Wei sets, Zi-Mao, and self-punishment of Chen, Wu, You and Hai. Old texts explain these in several ways.
Checking two signs
- Find each branch — Rabbit is Mao, Dog is Xu.
- Compare with the rules — Mao-Xu is a Six Harmony pair.
- Several relationships can coexist — Chou and Wei clash and share a punishment set; some pairs have none and count as neutral.
- Confirm the year boundary — folk custom uses Chinese New Year, the stem-branch calendar uses Lichun.
Seeing zodiac matching sensibly
Old marriage customs compared charts, with sign compatibility as one item. Today it's mostly light conversation.
- The sign reflects only the birth year — even traditional practice rarely judges two people by sign alone.
- "Clash" doesn't mean incompatible, and "harmony" doesn't guarantee a match — real relationships depend on character, communication and effort.
- Don't label people by sign.
Summary
Go back to the branches: triangles for Three Harmonies, pairs for Six Harmonies, opposites for clashes; harms follow from harmonies and clashes; punishments are separate sets. Enjoy them as cultural knowledge, not as a test for real relationships. For cultural reference only.
