28 Lunar Mansions
Ancient Chinese astronomers divided the band of sky traveled by the Moon and planets into 28 mansions, grouped by direction into four symbols of seven: the Azure Dragon of the East, Black Tortoise of the North, White Tiger of the West and Vermilion Bird of the South.
Mansion on duty today
The 28 mansions take turns being “on duty” one day each, in a 28-day cycle. This is the traditional calendar cycle, not the Moon's actual position.
