Case Review

Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure

Ren (壬) Water is the water of great rivers, signifying a long, ceaseless current, and the year and month pillars reveal Direct Officer and Friend. Looking back on the sixty years Goethe spent writing Faust, carried through from youth to old age, the image of a river flowing day and night fits well; the Direct Officer may be read in his career in the administration of the Duchy of Weimar, and the Friend in his friendship with Schiller.

Earth checks Water twice (Ji Si 己巳 and Xu 戌). His restraint in “laying down the pen” in later years and the composure of his reported last words, “More light,” can be observed in hindsight as “Earth channelling Water, the river returning to the sea.” “Man errs as long as he strives” — the onward rush of Ren Water reads as a gloss on a river bound for the ocean.

This is a retrospective cross-cultural comparison, not a definitive claim.
