Case Review
Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure
Ji (己) Earth is the Earth of fields and gardens, signifying management and cultivation. Looking back on the life of Qi Jiguang, who wrote “A noble title is not my aim; I only wish the seas were calm”: training the Qi Family Army in Zhejiang and Fujian, devising the Mandarin Duck formation, and spending more than ten years at Jizhen rebuilding the Great Wall and its watchtowers were all the work of “tending the fields.” With Water strong three times over, and Water governing wisdom, his military treatises, the New Treatise on Military Efficiency and the Record of Military Training, offer a point of observation.
Rob Wealth and Indirect Wealth are revealed in the year and month; Rob Wealth signifies a life of much obstruction. After Zhang Juzheng’s death he was repeatedly impeached, and the bleakness of his dismissal and return home in old age can be observed in hindsight from the angle of “Rob Wealth seizing the momentum.” Fire generates Earth; his diligence, “of the year’s three hundred sixty days, most were spent on horseback, spear in hand,” is a footnote to the Resource star supporting the self.
This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
