Case Review
Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure
Ren (壬) Water is the Water of rivers, signifying boldness and directness, with Rob Wealth and Hurting Officer revealed in the year and month. Looking back on the life of Hai Rui, styled “Gangfeng” (Firm Peak): his “Memorial on Public Order” scathingly rebuked the Jiajing Emperor (“Jiajing, Jiajing, every household picked clean”); he bought his own coffin before submitting it and was jailed and sentenced to death, mirroring the Hurting Officer’s urge to “cry out against injustice and remonstrate boldly.” Rob Wealth signifies being out of step with officialdom, as the anecdote of the “Doctor of the Brush-Rest” illustrates.
Earth appears twice and Earth controls Water. His lifelong poverty (at his death only a dozen or so taels of silver remained, and colleagues pooled money for his funeral) and his rocky official career can be observed in hindsight through the structure of “heavy Earth muddying the Water, the river blocked.” Yet Ren Water is a river in the end, and the name “Hai the Blue Sky” has been celebrated for four hundred years, a footnote to the truth that even muddy water can carry a boat.
This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
