Case Review
Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure
Gui (癸) Water is the Water of rain and dew, signifying nourishment of all things, with Eating God and Indirect Resource revealed in the year and month. Looking back on Zhang Juzheng’s Wanli reforms: the Single Whip tax method and the performance-evaluation system nourished the state’s finances and the people’s livelihood through institutional design, a strategic expression of “Eating God displaying its brilliance.” Indirect Resource signifies political maneuvering: his alliance with the eunuch Feng Bao and his “regency through authority” offer a point of observation.
Metal and Water are both strong, and Metal generates Water. His skill at recognizing and employing talent (Qi Jiguang to guard Jizhen, Li Chengliang to hold Liaodong, Pan Jixun to tame the rivers) is a footnote to “Resource supporting the self.” Yet strong Water has no Earth to control it; after his death his family property was confiscated, his posthumous title stripped and his reforms entirely abolished, which can be observed in hindsight from the angle of “much Water unchecked, a flood hard to contain.”
This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
