Case Review
Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure
Yi (乙) Wood is the wood of flowers and grasses; sitting on Mao (卯), its prosperous root, it is deeply anchored. Looking back on Qian Xuesen's life — “Science has no borders, but scientists have a motherland” — returning to China in 1955 against obstruction and leading the Two Bombs, One Satellite program reflects the Seven Killings and Direct Officer revealed in the year and month pillars: Seven Killings for boldness and decisiveness, Direct Officer for responsibility and integrity — one forceful, one upright, both put into practice.
Strong Metal and Water generate Wood; Water signifies intelligence and Metal resolve. The meticulous organisation and long-term thinking summed up in “five years to come home, ten years to build the bombs” may be read here. In later life he said, “My surname is Qian (money), but I do not love money,” and donated his prize money to set up a foundation — a gloss on the benevolence of Yi Wood.
This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
