Case Review

Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure

Jia (甲) Wood is the towering tree, with Rob Wealth and Eating God revealed in the year and month. Looking back on the life of Qiu Jin, “the Heroine of Jian Lake”: “I may not stand among men, but my heart is fiercer than a man’s.” Unbinding her feet, leaving her marriage and going to study in Japan mirror Rob Wealth pitted against feudal propriety. Eating God signifies poetic talent, as seen in her final line, “Autumn wind, autumn rain, sorrow unbearable.”

Earth appears twice (Xu 戌 and Xu), and the Wood is exhausted by Earth. Her execution at Xuantingkou in Shaoxing in 1907, at only thirty-two, can be observed in hindsight through the structure of “heavy Earth breaking Wood,” a tragic and heroic end. Yet Jia Wood rises straight to the clouds, and her name as a pioneer of women’s rights endures, a footnote to the Wood that broke while its will did not.

This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
