Case Review

Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure

Gui (癸) Water is the Water of rain and dew, signifying nimbleness and adapting to circumstances. Looking back on Su Shi’s life of “three rises and three falls” (Huangzhou, Huizhou, Danzhou): his open-hearted saying, “wherever my heart is at peace, that is my home,” mirrors Gui Water, which “is square in a square vessel and round in a round one.” With Water strong three times over, his writing flowed like water, and he became a master of poetry, ci lyrics, prose, calligraphy and painting alike, an observation of “Water governs wisdom and many talents.”

Direct Wealth and Indirect Resource are revealed in the year and month. Wealth signifies practical achievements for the people: building the Su Causeway in Hangzhou and fighting the floods in Xuzhou. Resource signifies artistic cultivation: he heads the “Four Masters of Song” calligraphy. There is no Wood in the three pillars; his lifelong persecution by both the Old and New factions, a man with “a bellyful of things out of step with the times,” can be given a retrospective footnote through the structure of “strong Water with no Wood to channel it, drifting without anchor.”

This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
