The Twelve Stages: Twelve States of Energy
In a Nutshell
The Twelve Stages describe a Heavenly Stem's "energy state" when it lands on each of the twelve Earthly Branches — like a human life: birth, growth, peak, decline, and return to the hidden.
Quick facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it measures | An element's condition — "how is it feeling right now" |
| Strong stages | Birth, Arrival, Peak |
| Weak stages | Death, Grave, Extinction |
| Arrangement | Yang stems travel forward along the branches; yin stems backward |
| Remember | The four Birth positions Hai, Yin, Si, Shen + "yang forward, yin backward" |
The twelve stages
Birth → Bath → Coming of Age → Arrival → Peak → Decline → Sickness → Death → Grave → Extinction → Conception → Nurturing → back to Birth, cycling endlessly.
- Birth: first breath, qi just stirring;
- Bath: washing off the dust of the womb — childlike innocence, with a touch of instability;
- Coming of Age: the capping ceremony — adulthood begins, talent starts to show;
- Arrival: taking office — energy finds its proper track;
- Peak: the summit, qi at its most splendid;
- Decline, Sickness, Death: after the peak, energy ebbs step by step;
- Grave: returning to storage — gathering in, lying low;
- Extinction: qi nearly gone, almost nothing;
- Conception, Nurturing: conceived anew and gestated — brewing the next Birth.
The arrangement: yang goes forward, yin goes backward
Yang stems travel forward along the branches; yin stems travel backward. Each starts (its Birth position) somewhere different:
| Stem | Birth position | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Jia Wood | Hai | Forward |
| Yi Wood | Wu | Backward |
| Bing Fire, Wu Earth | Yin | Forward |
| Ding Fire, Ji Earth | You | Backward |
| Geng Metal | Si | Forward |
| Xin Metal | Zi | Backward |
| Ren Water | Shen | Forward |
| Gui Water | Mao | Backward |
Example: Jia Wood starts Birth at Hai and moves forward — Hai Birth, Zi Bath, Chou Coming of Age, Yin Arrival, Mao Peak, Chen Decline, Si Sickness, Wu Death, Wei Grave, Shen Extinction, You Conception, Xu Nurturing.
How it's used
The Twelve Stages are a gauge for an element's *condition*: Birth, Arrival, and Peak mean Prosperous; Death, Grave, and Extinction mean Weak. They answer "how is this element feeling right now" — one layer of strength analysis.
Two reminders
- State isn't fortune: "Death" and "Extinction" sound scary but only name energy low points; "Peak" doesn't guarantee good news either — excess at the peak is its own imbalance.
- Never judge alone: the Twelve Stages are one reference dimension among many — combine with generating/controlling, Ten Gods, and Luck Pillars. Calling good luck from a single "Peak" is the beginner's most common overreach.
MoZhu tip
Memorize the four Birth positions "Hai, Yin, Si, Shen" (for Jia; Bing/Wu; Geng; Ren) plus "yang forward, yin backward" — the other six yin stems' starting points can be worked out gradually. Learn to read the table before trying to recite it.
