Luck Pillars: Ten-Year Chapters of Life
In a Nutshell
Luck Pillars are ten-year Stem-Branch chapters of life: the natal chart is the "foundation," the Luck Pillar is the "climate." The direction — forward or backward — depends on the year stem's polarity and your gender: yang-year males and yin-year females go forward; yin-year males and yang-year females go backward.
Quick facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | A Stem-Branch pair governing one decade |
| Direction | Yang-year male / yin-year female: forward; yin-year male / yang-year female: backward |
| Starts from | The Month Pillar, then forward or backward along the Stem-Branch order |
| Starting age | Days to the nearest solar term: 3 days = 1 year, 1 day = 4 months |
| Rule of thumb | Tradition: the stem rules the first 5 years, the branch the last 5 |
Forward or backward
- Years with a Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, or Ren year stem are "yang years"; Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, and Gui are "yin years."
- Males born in yang years and females born in yin years go forward; males born in yin years and females born in yang years go backward.
"Forward" and "backward" start from the Month Pillar: forward follows the Stem-Branch order; backward runs it in reverse.
Example: a man born in a Bing year (a yang year) with a Ding You Month Pillar. A yang-year male goes forward, so the Stem-Branch after Ding You is Wu Xu — his first Luck Pillar is Wu Xu, then Ji Hai, and so on.
When the first Luck Pillar starts
The starting age is converted from the days between the birth date and the nearest solar term:
- Forward: count the days from the birth date to the next solar term;
- Backward: count to the previous solar term;
- Three days = one year; one day = four months (two days = eight months, and so on).
Example: counting 9 days forward means the first Luck Pillar starts at age 3; 10 days means 3 years and 4 months. (Traditional texts have finer variants — e.g., one two-hour period counts as ten days; "three days to a year" is enough at the beginner level.)
Ten years per chapter
Each Luck Pillar governs ten years. Tradition adds that the stem rules the first five years and the branch the last five — useful as a reference. As the Luck Pillar's stems and branches generate, control, combine, and clash with the natal chart, they paint the decade's "climate": a Luck Pillar that supports the Useful God brings fair weather; one that clashes with it brings changeable skies.
Chart, Luck Pillar, and year
Remember the metaphor: the natal chart is your constitution, the Luck Pillar is the climate, the year is the weather. A strong constitution in a kind climate can ride out one bad storm (an unlucky year); a weak constitution in a harsh climate should stay careful even on sunny days (a lucky year). Read all three layers together — a conclusion from any single layer is one-sided.
A reminder
Luck Pillars describe the trend of a phase, not a verdict on fate. Knowing whether the next decade's climate runs "warm" or "cold" is for preparation — not resignation.
MoZhu tip
Casting Luck Pillars comes down to three decisions: the year stem fixes polarity, gender fixes the direction, the birth date fixes the starting age. Get those three right and the Luck Pillars are right. MoZhu's casting does this automatically — you can verify it against this process.
