What is Du Men?

Du Men is one of the Eight Doors of Qi Men Dun Jia. The Eight Doors make up the "Human Plate": they fly across the nine palaces and, together with the nine stars of the Heaven Plate and the nine palaces of the Earth Plate, complete a full Qi Men chart. Du Men sits in the Xun palace and belongs to Wood; among the doors its imagery leans inward, set against the outward imagery of Kai Men, the Open Door.

Its imagery follows the character Du — closed, guarded, hidden. When a question is read, the angle is usually one of restraint and consolidation rather than display: think of a team going quiet to build, or funds held in reserve. Like all door imagery, this is a symbolic reading, not a value judgment.

The old verse "take the nine palaces to know the nine stars; the eight doors follow the nine palaces in turn" states the rule by which the doors travel the chart. To see which palace Du Men has landed in, and which door serves as the Duty Messenger, read it together with the stars, the spirits, and the chart's formations. A full Qi Men chart lays all of this out at a glance. Door imagery belongs to traditional culture: take its symbolic structure and cultural meaning, and do not get stuck on the literal word.

Classical sources

"Take the nine palaces to know the nine stars; the eight doors follow the nine palaces in turn."

Plain words: Stars and doors alike travel on the framework of the nine palaces — this line states the rule by which the Eight Doors are laid out on the chart. (One variant reads "divide the nine stars." The circulating text is a Ming-era redaction in the Luo Tong / Chi family line; the Song original is lost, so there is no single authoritative edition.)
