What Is the Red Matchmaker
Symbolic Stars are computed markers in a Four Pillars chart — think of them a bit like "lucky stars" in Western folk belief: reference points for timing and flavor. The key difference is that a Symbolic Star is not a deity, a planet, or an object of worship; it is simply a named positional relationship among the stems and branches, derived by fixed rules.
The Red Matchmaker (Hong Luan), also called the Red Matchmaker Star, is one of these stars. Its lookup starts from the Year Branch and checks the other pillars' branches. The rule is "count backward from Mao": starting at Mao for the Zi year, count the twelve branches backward; whichever branch the Year Branch lands on is the Red Matchmaker. Concretely: Zi years see Mao, Chou years see Yin, Yin years see Chou, Mao years see Zi, Chen years see Hai, Si years see Xu, Wu years see You, Wei years see Shen, Shen years see Wei, You years see Wu, Xu years see Si, Hai years see Chen.
In traditional lore the Red Matchmaker is linked to romance and happy occasions, and it is usually mentioned together with Tian Xi (Heavenly Joy): Tian Xi sits exactly at the Red Matchmaker's opposing branch (a Zi year has its Red Matchmaker at Mao and its Heavenly Joy at You), and the two often appear together in Annual Pillar discussions. Two things need saying: this "backward from Mao" arrangement has no attested passage in the *San Ming Tong Hui* or the *Ming Li Tan Yuan* — it is the modern standard used by chart software, and its classical source is pending research [to be verified]; and the *San Ming Tong Hui*, Vol. 6, has a separate structure called "Hong Luan Tian Yin" (Red Matchmaker Heavenly Seal), which refers to the Eating God's storage branch — same name, different thing, not to be confused.
The Symbolic Stars lookup tool on this site marks the Red Matchmaker by the standard modern arrangement and notes the pending source on the page. The Symbolic Stars are reference only and support no predictions; matters of romance should always be judged against the whole chart and real circumstances. This page covers the lookup rule alone.

Zi years see Mao, Chou years see Yin, Yin years see Chou, Mao years see Zi, Chen years see Hai, Si years see Xu, Wu years see You, Wei years see Shen, Shen years see Wei, You years see Wu, Xu years see Si, Hai years see Chen — counting backward from Mao. Checked against the publicly available editions of the *San Ming Tong Hui*, *Xing Ming Su Yuan*, *Shen Feng Tong Kao*, and *Yuan Hai Zi Ping*: no matching arrangement was found, so the "no confirmed classical source" note stands.
