What is Ji Shen?
Ji Shen is a relational concept in Six-Line Divination: whichever line controls the Useful Line in the Five-Element cycle is called Ji Shen. The Useful Line stands for the matter asked about, and Ji Shen presses against it — Metal controls Wood, so a Metal line is Ji Shen to a Wood Useful Line; Wood controls Earth, so Wood is Ji Shen to Earth.
Ji Shen comes in moving and still, strong and weak forms. A moving Ji Shen that strikes the Useful Line acts openly and forcefully; a still one works quietly. And a Ji Shen that is itself exhausted, restrained by the day or month, or held in check by a moving Yuan Shen presses with far less force. Reading a hexagram means watching the whole web: is there a Yuan Shen moving to pin Ji Shen down? Is there a Chou Shen moving to feed it?
One caution: Ji Shen is not an automatic verdict. A strong Useful Line against a weak Ji Shen, or a Ji Shen neutralized by the day/month or tied up by Yuan Shen, all deserve a closer look. Six-Line reading weighs the entire network of generation and control — Ji Shen is one thread in it, and its meaning is always "that which controls the Useful Line," nothing more. Grasp that single thread and you will not mistake Ji Shen for a fixed doom. Ji Shen describes a controlling relationship; it carries no advice about what to do or avoid.
Classical sources
"Whatever controls the Useful Line is Ji Shen."
Plain words: Any line whose element controls the Useful Line's element is called Ji Shen — the counterpart of Yuan Shen, which supports the Useful Line.
