What is Kai Men?
Kai Men is one of the Eight Doors of Qi Men Dun Jia — the "Human Plate" that flies across the nine palaces, joined with the Heaven Plate's nine stars and the Earth Plate's nine palaces to complete a chart. Kai Men sits in the Qian palace and belongs to Metal. Together with Xiu Men and Sheng Men it forms the three most-used doors, the ones traditional practice mentions most often.
The old verse "when you meet the doors Kai, Xiu, or Sheng among the eight, all matters met with them turn out as wished" groups the three together — a measure of how highly tradition rates them. Kai's imagery follows the character Kai: opening, launching, going public — founding a company, opening a store, starting a project. When a question is read, the angle is usually beginning and initiation.
In practice, noting which palace Kai Men has landed in — and which door serves as Duty Messenger — is a key step in reading a chart; combine the landed palace with stars, spirits, and formations.
