What is the Useful God?
The Useful God (Yong Shen) is the core concept of Six-Line Divination: the one line in a hexagram that stands for the matter at hand. Whatever brings the querent — money, work, family — you take the matching Six Relation as the Useful Line: Wealth for money matters, Officials for career matters, and so on. Once fixed, the entire reading revolves around it — hence the rule "fix the Useful God first, then read the rest."
The usual mapping runs: Parents lines for documents, study, and elders; Siblings for peers and partnerships; Wealth for money and business; Officials for career and office; Children for juniors, craft, and leisure. If several lines share the same relation, you narrow it down with line position, moving or still status, and the day and month stems-branches.
A Useful Line's condition is read as strength and weakness: supported by the day and month or fed by moving lines it is strong; controlled by them or wounded by moving lines it is weak — strength and weakness describe the balance of forces around the question right now. Around it runs a full relational grammar: Yuan Shen generates it, Ji Shen controls it, Chou Shen feeds Ji Shen. Generations of diviners have used and refined this grammar until it became the common language of Six-Line reading. The old warning still holds: pick the wrong Useful Line and the whole chart goes wrong — beginners should memorize which relation matches which kind of question before anything else.
Classical sources
"The Useful God is the line of the matter being divined."
Plain words: The Useful God is simply the line that stands for the question asked; read the Useful Line first, then its relations with the other lines.
