What is Sǐ Men?

Sǐ Men is one of the Eight Doors of Qi Men Dun Jia. The Eight Doors are the core of the Human Plate, describing the state and direction things take at each stage; they turn with the stems, branches, stars, and spirits when a chart is cast. Sǐ Men's imagery is withdrawal, stillness, and ending — set against doors of open display like Kai, Xiu, and Sheng, it forms one pole of the doors' symbolic system.

The character Si here means ending and storing away: like winter among the four seasons, or the deep night of a day, when all things return to storage and lie still. The traditional comparisons are fallen leaves returning to their roots, or a sealed archive — the emphasis is on ceasing to project outward and drawing inward. Grasping this layer keeps the door in its place in the system instead of reading it in isolation.

Traditionally Sǐ Men is paired with endings, farewells, and storing-away — the old verse says that when asked what the Death Door governs, it suits only mourning the dead and carrying out sentences: affairs that need winding down and settling. Door imagery must always be read against the question asked and the whole chart; the same door weighs differently in different charts, so one door alone never decides a reading. Start by learning how the eight doors travel as a system, then feel out each door's difference in imagery.

Classical sources

"If you ask what the Death Door governs: it suits only mourning the dead and carrying out sentences."

Plain words: This verse line ties Sǐ Men to endings and farewells — matters that need winding down — the old summary of the door's traditional direction of use.
