What is the Tai Yang star?

The Tai Yang star is one of the fourteen major stars of Zi Wei Dou Shu, a lord star of the central heavens. As the name says, it takes the imagery of the Sun's essence: radiance, shining on all without favor — set against the Tai Yin star, the Moon's essence, the two form the famed "Sun and Moon" pair of the system. Among the star groups, Tai Yang and Tai Yin stand together as central lords, and the pair is often read against each other, each the other's mirror.

The Questions and Answers on the Stars says of Tai Yang: the Tai Yang star belongs to Fire; it is the essence of the Sun — the very model of creation; in the numbers it gives its bearer an air of distinction, fit for both civil and martial paths. Traditionally Tai Yang is tied to reputation, distinction, generosity, and breadth of heart; there is also the old saying "noble but not rich" — read that as imagery, nothing more. See the Classical sources section below for the original passage.

Tai Yang's light and dark vary with the palace it lands in — exalted, prosperous, favorable, or fallen — so any reading must be set against the specific palace; a full Zi Wei chart marks each star's brightness. This page covers only the star's basic meaning and its source, and makes no predictions.
