What is the Tian Ji star?
The Tian Ji star is one of the fourteen major stars of Zi Wei Dou Shu, the third star of the Southern Dipper. In the star system the Dipper majors are headed by Zi Wei and the Southern Dipper majors by Tian Fu, and Tian Ji stands third in the Southern Dipper line. Its transformed breath is "Goodness," its element Yi Wood, and tradition ties it to intellect, planning, and strategy — the star of thinking and scheming in the system.
The *Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu* (Book 1, "Questions and Answers on the Stars") opens its entry on Tian Ji by calling it a Wood star, the third of the Southern Dipper and "the kindly star that adds years", whose transformed breath is Goodness. Traditional commentaries play on the word "good/skillful", reading Tian Ji as master of intellect and planning, and, because it is active rather than still, tying it to change and adaptability. The original passage is quoted below.
In combination imagery Tian Ji is often named with Tian Liang — old combination names like "Ji, Yue, Tong, Liang" are later labels built on star natures. A good way to learn it: read Tian Ji as the symbol of "thinking and planning" — whichever palace it lands in, that palace's affairs take on a planning, changeable coloring; the details still need the stars sharing and facing its palace. Noting which palace Tian Ji lands in and which stars share or face it is a standard step in reading; its palace is traditionally read together with the Siblings and Friends palaces. A full Zi Wei chart lays out the stars and palaces at a glance. This page covers only the star's basic meaning and its source, and makes no predictions.
Classical sources
"Tian Ji belongs to Wood; it is the third star of the Southern Dipper, the kindly star that adds years. Its transformed breath is called Goodness; placed well, it harmonizes the other stars and sets the measure of a life."
Plain words: Tian Ji is Wood, the third star of the Southern Dipper, a kindly star associated with added years; its transformed breath is Goodness.
