What is Tian Kui?
Tian Kui is an auxiliary star of Zi Wei Dou Shu, paired with Tian Yue as "Kui Yue." Elementally it belongs to Ding Fire, an assisting star of the Southern Dipper group. The two Kui Yue stars share the imagery of examination honors and noble assistance; readings usually set them against each other, and as a pair they are among the weightiest auxiliaries — worth noting whenever they appear.
The *Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu* (Book 1, "Questions and Answers on the Stars") treats Tian Kui and Tian Yue in a single entry, answered by Master Xiyi: "Kui and Yue are the stars in the Dipper that govern examination honours"; in the Life palace they "sit in nobility and face nobility". The old books read the pair as symbols of scholarly honours and helpful patrons. The original passage is quoted below.
In a real chart, note which palace Tian Kui lands in and which major star shares it — an important detail in reading. Tian Kui takes on different traditional colorings in each of the twelve palaces, so study it together with the major star and the palace. A full Zi Wei chart lays out the stars and palaces at a glance. The old writings on Tian Kui are terse, arguing mostly from examination honors and noble assistance with little elaboration. Read it against Tian Yue and feel out where the two agree and differ in that imagery.
Classical sources
"Kui and Yue are the stars in the Dipper that govern examination honours. Entering the Life palace, sitting in nobility and facing nobility, or joined by Zuo Fu, You Bi and other good stars, they never fail to bring wealth and rank."
Plain words: Tian Kui and Tian Yue govern examination honours and noble help; with other good stars in the Life palace they bring wealth and rank.
