The Strength School and the Chart-Structure School (Wang Shuai Pai vs. Ge Ju Pai)

In a Nutshell

What are the two schools?

The most influential split in the history of BaZi reading comes from two ways of annotating *Di Tian Sui* (Dripping Heavenly Marrow). In the Qing dynasty, Ren Tieqiao wrote an expanded commentary taking the Day Master's Strength (Prosperous/Weak) as the governing principle of a reading — the Strength school. In the Republican era, Xu Lewu judged Ren's commentary to depart from the original commentary in many places and wrote *Di Tian Sui Bu Zhu* (Supplementary Notes on *Di Tian Sui*) to fill Ren's gaps, arguing that Chart Pattern must be fixed before discussing generation and control — the Chart-Structure school. Both schools spring from the same *Di Tian Sui* verses and Liu Ji's original commentary, and the split is a conscious one: Xu Lewu's own preface states plainly that the supplementary notes and Ren's commentary each preserve their own meaning.

The Strength school's governing principle is the Day Master's Strength. Ren's commentary holds that one first reads how deeply the Day Master gains the season's command, the ground, and the trend — then fixes Balancing (Support and Weaken), Seasonal Regulation, mediation, and following-transformation. Its view of structure is the transformation of form and qi — images such as single-element dominance, two-spirit formations, and genuine or false following transformations: structure is the image the qi's momentum presents, not a frame fitted to the month commander's branch first. The annotator Sun Zhengzhi, in his preface to *Di Tian Sui Chan Wei* (Illuminating the Subtleties of *Di Tian Sui*), criticizes this approach as nearly reading fate by the Day Master's Strength alone, while also affirming its exploratory value for the changes of form and qi.

The Chart-Structure school's governing principle is to fix Chart Pattern through generation and control first. In *Di Tian Sui Bu Zhu*, Xu Lewu proposes "first discuss generation and control to fix the Chart Pattern, then consult the Symbolic Stars to fix fortune and calamity" as the fixed method of a reading; he restores the orthodox eight month-commander structures — Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Seal, Indirect Seal, Eating God, Hurting Officer — which occupy their own section, and the longest one, in the *Bu Zhu*. Once the structure is fixed, its success or failure and its rescues are discussed through generation, control, transformation, and countering.

For comparing the two schools, *Di Tian Sui Chan Wei* is the preferred base text: it is the only edition that preserves all three layers — the verses, Liu Ji's original commentary, and the Ren commentary — so the three positions can be told apart precisely; *Di Tian Sui Bu Zhu* is the complete representative of the Xu position. Note that MoZhu's BaZi engine only lays out the chart and presents its structure — it makes no Useful-God judgments — and the two schools' disagreement sits exactly at the judgment stage. This site therefore presents both schools side by side, labeled by position, and does not choose sides for the reader. This page introduces traditional culture only.

Classical sources

"The prosperous should be controlled; the extremely prosperous should be drained. The weak should be generated; the extremely weak should be controlled."
(Paraphrased from the classical Chinese original.)

Plain-language reading: If the Day Master is prosperous, control it; if prosperous to the extreme, drain its qi. If weak, generate it; if weak to the extreme, control it instead. This is the Ren school's programmatic statement of its governing principle — its wording awaits word-for-word checking against a scanned edition.

Source: *Di Tian Sui Bu Zhu* (Supplementary Notes on *Di Tian Sui*), Xu Lewu's supplementary commentary (Sun Zhengzhi's annotated translation, China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine Classics, 2012) [to be verified]

Plain-language reading: First fix the Chart Pattern through the generation-and-control relationships, then consult the Symbolic Stars to judge fortune and calamity — the Xu school's fixed method of reading. Wording awaits word-for-word checking against a scanned edition.

"Draw out their natures, follow their momentum; Seasonal Regulation, mediation."
(Paraphrased from the classical Chinese original.)

Source: *Di Tian Sui Zheng Yi* (Verifying the Meaning of *Di Tian Sui*), Sun Zhengzhi's preface (paraphrasing Xu Lewu's summary of the Ren commentary's order of taking and using) [to be verified]

Plain-language reading: Guide the natures of the stems and branches, follow the momentum of the Five Elements' qi, then apply Seasonal Regulation, mediation, and other means — and not limit oneself to the month commander's branch. This is Xu Lewu's summary of the Ren commentary's order of taking and using; original wording pending verification.
