What is Wen Chang?
First, a clarification: this entry covers Wen Chang the auxiliary star of Zi Wei Dou Shu — not the Wen Chang symbolic star of Four Pillars astrology. The two belong to different systems and must not be mixed. Zi Wei's Wen Chang belongs to Xin Metal, an auxiliary star of the Southern Dipper, paired with Wen Qu as "Chang Qu" — the stars of documents and examination honors in the system.
The *Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu* (Book 1, "Questions and Answers on the Stars") opens: "Wen Chang governs examination honours"; in the Life palace it makes a person "quiet and refined, scholarly, widely read". "Examination honours" comes from the imperial exam era and stands for documents, tests and literary reputation. Wen Chang is usually read together with Wen Qu as the pair Chang–Qu. The original passage is quoted below.
In a real chart, note which palace Wen Chang lands in and whether Wen Qu shares or faces it — an important detail in reading. Wen Chang takes on different traditional colorings in each of the twelve palaces, so study it together with the major star and the palace. A full Zi Wei chart lays out the stars and palaces at a glance. The old writings on Wen Chang run heavily on examination-era honors and carry the coloring of their era; take the star's attributes and its structural ties.
Classical sources
"Wen Chang governs examination honours. Guarding the Life or Body palace, it makes a person quiet and refined, scholarly and graceful, handsome and well-built, widely read with a strong memory, and unusually quick-witted."
Plain words: Wen Chang governs examinations and scholarly honours; in the Life palace it shows as refinement, learning and quick wit.
