Direct Officer (Zheng Guan)

In a Nutshell

One of the Ten Gods: the element that controls the Day Master with the opposite Yin/Yang polarity — the ancients compared it to "a ruler in the state, an elder in the home."

What Is Direct Officer

The Ten Gods are the ten names given to every stem and branch in a chart based on two things: how it relates to the Day Master through the Five Elements' Generating and Controlling cycles, and whether its Yin/Yang polarity matches the Day Master's. If the Day Master is the "you" at the center of the chart, the Ten Gods are the ten stock characters in its drama — roughly like how planets take on roles such as the teacher, the challenger, or the provider in Western astrology, except here each role is derived purely from element relationships and polarity.

Direct Officer (Zheng Guan) is the role defined by one rule: it controls the Day Master, with the opposite Yin/Yang polarity. For example, a Jia (Yang Wood) Day Master is controlled by Metal, and Xin (Yin Metal) has the opposite polarity to Jia — so a Jia Day Master seeing Xin is Direct Officer. Likewise Yi seeing Geng, Bing seeing Gui, and so on. For Earthly Branches, the judgment goes by the branch's primary Hidden Stem: a Jia Day Master seeing You counts, because You's primary Hidden Stem is Xin.

The *Zi Ping Zhen Quan* ranks Direct Officer first among chart structures, likening it to "a ruler in the state, an elder in the home" (*zai guo you jun, zai jia you qin*): just as a state cannot go without its ruler and a home without its elder, Direct Officer stands for the order and norms that deserve respect. By extension, it is linked to reputation, rank, office, responsibility, discipline, and management ability. In temperament, the traditional lore leans toward uprightness, decorum, steadiness, responsibility, and care for one's good name — though if the Officer stars are heavy while the Day Master cannot carry them, the same lore warns of timidity, conservatism, and over-caution.

For family roles, the lore varies with the chart owner's gender: in a man's chart the Officer/Killings pair traditionally stands for children and can also reference a boss or superior; in a woman's chart the Officer is the traditional reference for the husband. These are common sayings only — never draw conclusions from one or two Ten Gods alone; always read the whole chart. The Ten Gods Analyzer tool on this site lists each pillar's Ten God under the given Day Master, with the derivation steps.

The key to Direct Officer is the single rule — "it controls me, opposite polarity" — kept distinct from the Seven Killings: both control the Day Master, but same polarity is the Killings (Indirect Officer) and opposite polarity is Direct Officer. Once this clicks, half of the whole Ten Gods system falls into place.

Classical sources

"The Officer controls the self; though different from the Seven Killings, one is still under its control. Why, then, must it so strictly avoid punishment, clash, breaking and harm, and be honoured like this?"

Plain words: The Direct Officer is the "respected" controlling force; the text goes on to explain that no one stands above all rules, so a well-placed Officer is treated with special care.

"Taking Jia as the example… seeing Xin: Direct Officer, Salary Horse, Spirit of Honour."

Plain words: A Jia day meeting Xin is the Direct Officer (Zheng Guan), also called Salary Horse.

"Water likewise generates Wood, yet the Seal is either direct or indirect; Metal likewise controls Wood, yet the result is either Officer or Killing."

Plain words: The same relationship (Water feeds Wood, Metal controls Wood) splits into two Ten Gods depending on whether the yin–yang polarity matches.
