Case Review
Original writing · hindsight review · anchored in known history, viewed through chart structure
Geng (庚) Metal is the Metal of blades and swords, signifying uprightness and decisiveness, with Direct Officer and Rob Wealth revealed in the year and month. Looking back on the life of Wang Guowei, “the comprehensive scholar of his generation”: using oracle-bone inscriptions to verify the Records of the Grand Historian, pioneering Dunhuang studies, and originating the “theory of jingjie (poetic realms)” in Remarks on Song Lyrics in the Human World mirror the rigorous scholarship of Direct Officer and the precision of Metal.
The revealed Rob Wealth signifies the conflict between his mindset as a Qing loyalist and the tide of the times. In 1927 he drowned himself in Kunming Lake, leaving the note, “At fifty I lack only death; after such upheavals, honor forbids further humiliation,” which can be observed in hindsight from the angle of “Rob Wealth stealing the will, Metal sinking to the bottom of the water,” one of the great tragedies of Chinese scholarship. His pursuit of “an independent spirit” is the ultimate footnote to the fierce rigidity of Metal.
This is a cultural retrospective at the level of three pillars, not a fatalistic judgment.
