What is the Calamity Star?
The Calamity Star (Jie Sha) is a Symbolic Star in the Four Pillars, found at the "Extinction" (jué) position of each Three Harmony combination: Shen, Zi, Chen (Water) look for Si; Yin, Wu, Xu (Fire) look for Hai; Si, You, Chou (Metal) look for Yin; Hai, Mao, Wei (Wood) look for Shen. First use the year or day branch to decide which combination the chart belongs to, then look in the other branches for the matching branch. For example, if your year branch is Shen (Monkey) — a member of the Shen, Zi, Chen Water combination — and another pillar also holds Si (Snake), you carry the Calamity Star.
"Jie" carries the sense of seizing. In the Twelve Stages, "Extinction" is the position where an element's energy is cut off and no longer flows; the Calamity Star sits exactly at each combination's Extinction point, and the ancients held that such a position harbors a seizing, plundering energy — hence the name. In classical texts it is constantly paired with the Death Star (Wang Shen): the *San Ming Tong Hui*, juan 3, "On the Calamity Star and the Death Star" (Lùn Jié Shà Wáng Shén), treats the two in one chapter, and the Death Star is precisely the Calamity Star's clash branch (for Shen, Zi, Chen the Calamity Star is Si and the Death Star is Hai) — the two rules are exact opposites.
The classical record is *San Ming Tong Hui*, juan 3, "On the Calamity Star and the Death Star," which states each rule plainly ("Shen, Zi, Chen take Si as the Calamity Star," and so on for the other three). The quotation has been checked against a public collated edition of the Ming Wan Mingying text.
MoZhu's Symbolic Stars lookup tool marks the Calamity Star automatically by the standard rule, so you can verify your own chart. A Symbolic Star is only a reference — reading a chart still starts with the Month Pillar and the Chart Pattern. This page covers the finding rule and its source only; it draws no conclusions from the star.
