What is Bath (Mu Yu)?

Bath is the second stage of the "Twelve Stages," describing the Five Elements' qi just after birth, receiving its first washing. The full Twelve Stages run Birth, Bath, Coming of Age, Arrival, Peak, Decline, Sickness, Death, Grave, Extinction, Conception, Nurturing — Bath comes right after Birth. The ancients named this stage for the bathing of a newborn, or young bamboo washed by rain after breaking the soil: the newly born thing still needs cleansing, its form not yet settled.

The ordering rule: yang stems move forward, yin stems move backward. Take Jia Wood: Jia's Birth is at Hai, and counting one step forward, Zi is Bath — so Jia Wood's Bath falls on Zi. Each stem's Bath branch: Jia–Zi, Yi–Si, Bing–Mao, Ding–Shen, Wu–Mao, Ji–Shen, Geng–Wu, Xin–Hai, Ren–You, Gui–Yin (Wu follows Bing, Ji follows Ding). MoZhu's Twelve Stages lookup tool lists the stage of each of the Four Pillars' stems automatically from a birth time.

Bath carries the alternate name "Defeat" (Bai), tied to its role in the Symbolic Stars method: the Peach Blossom star (Xian Chi) is taken precisely from a formation's Bath branch, which is why the *San Ming Tong Hui*'s chapter "On Xian Chi" says "thus the Five Elements' Bath ground is named Xian Chi." Knowing Bath is the key to understanding how Peach Blossom is located; the Peach Blossom entry covers that in detail.

Stage names describe only the rise and fall of the Five Elements' energy, never real-world events directly. For Bath, the point is to remember its position in the twelve-step order and the yang-forward / yin-backward rule. This page introduces the stage's meaning and the lookup method, and draws no inferences from it.

Classical sources

"The Five Elements lodge in twelve palaces: Birth, Bathing, Cap and Belt, Official Post, Emperor, Decline, Sickness, Death, Grave, Extinction, Conception, Nurture, circling without end."

Plain words: The fixed order of the Twelve Stages.

"The San Ming Ti Yao says: … fifth, Bathing, also called Defeat: things have just been born, their bodies soft and fragile and easily harmed, as a newborn bathed on the third day nearly cannot bear it."

Plain words: Bathing, also called Defeat, is the fragile newborn stage, easily harmed. Jia Wood is in Bathing at Zi, Yi Wood at Si.

"Yang gathers and advances, so it runs forward; yin disperses and retreats, so it runs backward. That is why Birth, Bathing and the rest differ, forward for yang and backward for yin."

Plain words: Yang stems count forward, yin stems backward, so the two stems of one element land on different branches.
