What is Yuan Shen?
Yuan Shen is a relational concept in Six-Line Divination: whichever line generates the Useful Line in the Five-Element cycle is called Yuan Shen. Think of the Useful Line as a person and Yuan Shen as whatever nourishes them — Wood generates Fire, so Wood is Yuan Shen to Fire; Fire generates Earth, so Fire is Yuan Shen to Earth. A moving Yuan Shen feeding the Useful Line is traditionally read as the Useful Line having something to lean on.
Yuan Shen, like everything here, comes moving or still, strong or weak: a moving Yuan Shen feeds openly, a still one feeds quietly; one supported by the day and month is strong, one controlled and wounded can barely feed at all. Support can also arrive indirectly — Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood, so Metal becomes Wood's indirect source, and readers trace the chain back along it. These layered chains are exactly what makes the Six-Line network so finely woven.
Opposite Yuan Shen stands Ji Shen: Ji Shen controls the Useful Line while Yuan Shen controls Ji Shen, so a moving Yuan Shen sometimes doubles as a leash on Ji Shen. There are also Chou Shen, which feeds Ji Shen, and the Draining Line, which siphons the Useful Line's energy — together with Yuan Shen and Ji Shen they form the full network. The key to Yuan Shen is the single thread: whatever generates the Useful Line. Yuan Shen only analyzes where the Useful Line draws strength; read it with the day, the month, and the moving and still lines of the whole chart, never in isolation.
